First Indigenous Student Trustee Introduced

At the Tuesday, December 3 Annual Meeting of the Lakehead District School Board, Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute Grade 11 International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme student, Keira Essex, was introduced as the first Indigenous Student Trustee. One student from each of the secondary schools was interviewed for the position of Indigenous Student Trustee.

“The Board is extremely pleased to welcome Keira as the first Indigenous Student Trustee of the Lakehead District School Board,” says Ellen Chambers, Chair of the Lakehead District School Board. “Keira will play a significant role in ensuring that the voices of Indigenous students are well represented at the Board table.”

In addition to her studies, Keira is very busy with numerous activities at her school and in her community:

  • Kanawayhitowin Indigenous Youth Safety Training Workshop;
  • Magnus Theatre Collective Creation Project;
  • EcoSuperior Summer Camp Volunteer;
  • Sustainability Youth Movement; and
  • hunder Pride

Following secondary school, Kiera plans to attend university and major in environmental science and minor in Indigenous studies.

The student trustee provides representation for all Lakehead Public Schools students in accordance with Ontario Legislation.
