Why Take AP?

  • Advanced Placement (AP) is a program in the United States and Canada.
  • AP courses allow students the opportunity for enriched, intensive study in one or more subjects of interest and strength.
  • AP courses occur at the grade 12 level and are designed to provide students with background and knowledge equivalent to support them in completing a College Board AP exam.
  • Students may earn prerequisite requirements for the university based on their performance on the standardized AP exam.  Each university decides independently how to recognize the successful completion of AP courses and has a clearly articulated AP policy that students can access.
  • AP courses cover both the Ontario curriculum and the AP content.
  • A student’s final report card mark is based on their knowledge of the Ontario curriculum.
  • The credit reflected on a student’s transcript is for the Ontario curriculum. There is no indication on the transcript that a student has taken an AP-enriched course
  • Evaluation of the AP content occurs during the standardized AP exam (written annually in May). Students may opt not to write the College Board AP exam.
  • Students who are interested in some AP courses do not have to take all the AP offerings and may customize their timetable based on areas of strength and interest.

What is Pre-AP?

  • Pre-AP courses are based on the Ontario Curriculum. They are NOT required for students to take AP courses in later grades but help students build knowledge and skills to support them in AP courses.
  • Students can expect an increased workload in Pre-AP, as they focus on developing the skills and habits needed for success in grade 12 AP courses, including inquiry, problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration.
  • Courses are designed to tap into students’ genuine passions for subject content while providing an enriched environment for those seeking an extra challenge.
