A Thousand Words

On Friday February 24, Crestview Public School Grade 8 students used photography as a vehicle and tool for emotional and academic expression in the classroom. As part of a Ministry of Education funded Teacher Leadership and Learning Program, Ecole Gron Morgan Public School teacher William Gross continued his “A Thousand Words” research project with students at Crestview Public School.

“Through this project, our students had the opportunity to explore how they can purposefully and mindfully create photographs to investigate emotional expression,” says Jo-Anne Giertuga

Students explored basic photographic principles including lighting, composition, portraiture, close-up photography as well as black and white strategies. They learned to purposefully manipulate and control various factors in photography to express themselves.

Previous student photographs from the “A Thousand Words” project have been exhibited at The Thunder Bay Art Gallery. The success of which, has led to another request to exhibit the photographs in June 2017.
