International Women’s Day Celebrated

International Women’s Day will be observed and celebrated at Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate and Vocational Institute on Thursday, March 8. In a big way! Organized by Grade 12 Student Brandi Hale, International Women’s Day will start off with a breakfast and a guest speaker followed by workshops for Grade 9 and 10 female students from Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate and Vocational Institute and Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute. The day will conclude with the screening of the film “Girl Rising” in the Churchill Library at 7:00 p.m.
“We are extremely proud and pleased with the efforts made by Brandi to organize this incredible International Women’s Day for students from both Churchill and Westgate,” says Ryan McDonnell, Vice Principal of Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate and Vocational Institute. “From the breakfast and guest speaker to the workshops and the concluding film, a variety of topics will be available for the students to learn and participate in.”
The International Women’s Day event at Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate and Vocational Institute
Event will begin with a breakfast for the students with guest speaker Nadine Doucette. Ms. Doucette teaches Human Resources at Confederation College in addition to operating her own HR consulting firm. She is also the Chair of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre Board. Ms. Doucette will be speaking to the students about women in the 21st century.
Following the breakfast and guest speaker address, the participating students will have the opportunity to attend the following workshop sessions led by fellow students and community partners:
Women in Leadership
This session will explore the contributions of female leaders in business, politics, science and other areas. It will also discuss some of the barriers that women need to overcome in leadership positions.
Sexual Consent
Students attending this engaging workshop will learn what consent means. It will explore common views related to consent while in under the influence of alcohol, consent in relationships. It will also address what consent is and what it isn’t.
The Gender Pay Gap
The difference between what men and women in Canada earn will be examined and discussed in this session.
Missing and Murdered Indigenous Woman and Girls
This session will share some of the stories and statistics about the violence perpetrated against Indigenous women and girls as well as introducing some of the systemic barrier which prevent women from getting support.
Women in the Media
During this session, students will examine how women are portrayed in the media. The session will provide an opportunity for the students to explore how the stereotypical image of women has changed over time.
The International Women’s Day activities at Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate and Vocational Institute will conclude with screening of the film “Girl Rising” at 7:00 p.m. in the school library. “Girl Rising” is a documentary focused on nine unforgettable girls living in the developing world, confronting tremendous challenges to pursue their dreams. When it was released in 2013 it began as a film but has quickly evolved into a book and became a movement meant to provide resources and support for anyone interested in becoming involved in the mission to increase education for girls. Admission is free but donations will be accepted. The donations will be directed to the “Girl Rising” organization.
