Pitching in for the RFDA
On Tuesday, March 8, Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute Foods and Nutrition students put the finishing touches on meals that helped the Food Distribution Association (RFDA) in addressing hunger issues in our community. The soups and sandwiches were prepared by the students for various drop in meal programs throughout the city.
“This was an excellent opportunity for our students to practice making foods like soups and sandwiches,” says Kathryn McKee, Foods and Nutrition Teacher at Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute. “At the same time, they helped to make a positive impact in our community through their efforts.”
Once a month, students from Lakehead Public Schools Foods and Nutrition classes make soup and sandwiches for the RFDA. The food prepared by the students contributes to the RFDA’s weekly schedule of healthy homemade food distributed to various drop in meal programs. Foods and Nutrition teachers are able to use this opportunity to practice making soup and sandwiches with their class, involve their students in community service work, educate their students on where the food is going and why it’s needed, as well as expose the students to the work that the RFDA does in Thunder Bay and our regional community.
