Students Attend Summer Learning Programs

Over 50 Grade 8 students have been attending summer learning programs at two locations – Sherbrooke School and Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute during the last two weeks of August. Students have been participating in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities, cultural teachings, and community connected experiential learning while completing the expectations of the Grade 9 Learning Strategies credit.

“Through the summer program, the students have been building and strengthening academic skills as well as transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem solving,” says Jane Lower, Student Success Leader, Lakehead Public Schools. “It has been a wonderful opportunity to experience enriching activities and to build relationships with peers, graduation coaches and school staff prior to beginning secondary school.

During the program, the students learned about the many program choices available in secondary school. Additionally, the students were able to tour their future secondary school and visited Lakehead University to participate in activities led by the LU Aboriginal Mentorship Program students.
