Tour for Humanity Stops at Agnew

On Wednesday, May 1, Agnew H. Johnston Public School will become a stop on a very important tour. Intermediate students will have the unique opportunity to learn about topics of diversity, democracy, and Canadian civic rights and responsibilities in a specially made mobile human rights education centre. The Tour for Humanity workshop is facilitated by Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies.
“The workshop will cover a variety of topics including the Residential Schools System and the internment of Japanese Canadians during the Second World War,” says Adam Weichel, Intermediate Teacher at Agnew H. Johnston Public School. “In addition, the students review past injustices, current issues including cyber bullying and modern-day examples of intolerance will also be examined and discussed.”
The Tour for Humanity cost $1.2 million to conceive, design and build. It is a 30-seat, wheel-chair accessible, state-of-the-art, technologically advanced mobile education centre that presents information on the effects and consequences of hate and intolerance. The experience travels throughout the province, educating people from different personal and professional backgrounds and experiences. It provides education on historical events, and focus on how these events are relevant to both Canadian and global perspectives.
