Addressing Gender Violence

On Monday, December 5, student leaders from each Lakehead Public Schools elementary and secondary school attended the Engaging Male Students to Reduce and Prevent Gender-Based Violence workshop and training session. The students in Grades 7 to 10 learned skills to help them to be effective leaders on the issue of gender-based violence. The workshop and training session took place the day before the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women which is supported through the White Ribbon Campaign.
“This was an excellent opportunity for our students to receive training on the issue of gender based violence,” says Jeff Upton, Lakehead Public Schools Education Officer and workshop organizer. “Our presenters acted as positive, strong role models for the young men and boys as they demonstrated their value of women as equals. The students also learned how to have healthy, equal relationships.”

The White Ribbon Campaign is a global movement of men and boys working to end male violence against women and girls. White Ribbon positively engages men, young men and boys through relevant educational programming that challenges language and behaviours, as well as harmful ideas of manhood that lead to violence against women.
