Building Language Skills and Having Fun!

For three weeks this summer, 20 newcomer students in Grades 1 to 5 from numerous schools had the opportunity to work on their language skills in a fun and exciting summer camp setting at Algonquin Avenue Public School. Funding for the program was made possible through a special grant from the Council of Ontario Directors of Education (CODE).

“English skills will be the focus in order to support the success of newcomer students in our schools,” says Donica LeBlanc, Supervising Principal – Early Years, Lakehead Public Schools. “In keeping with the saying about all work and no play, the students will have plenty of opportunities to socialize and to have fun!”

The days are filled with vocabulary building, field trips to local sites and numerous hands-on experiences for the students.

“We are very thankful for the financial support received from CODE,” says LeBlanc. “They truly see the benefit of offering this special camp to support the success of our newcomer students and their success.”

In addition to the support from CODE, Lakehead Public Schools has partnered with the Thunder Bay Multicultural Association to present this opportunity to Lakehead Public Schools newcomer students.

Della Glenn from the Council of Ontario Directors of Education (CODE) was in attendance at the Camp on Thursday, July 12 at 10:30 a.m.
