Building Strong Math Skills

Students work with professional carpenters at Math Camp

How can you build math skills during the summer break? By learning carpentry! A number of Lakehead Public Schools elementary students entering Grade 7 this year are working on their math skills and learning about carpentry with members of the Carpenters Local 1669 at a special math learning camp.

“This has been an amazing experience for both the students and the members of Carpenters Local 1669,” says Donica LeBlanc, Supervising Principal – Early Years, Lakehead Public Schools. “Through a hands on project with the carpenters, the students have been learning that math is essential requirement for carpentry. They have been truly building their math skills as they complete their carpentry projects.”

The students are busy putting the finishing touches on their carpentry projects. The three week camp will wrap up this week and the students will be receiving certificates of completion on Friday, July 14 at the Carpenters’ Local Union 1669 Training Centre.
