Celebrating Family Literacy Day

Wednesday, January 27 is Family Literacy Day in Canada. Family Literacy Day was created to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. To celebrate this very important day, a variety of family focused literacy events occurred throughout the entire Lakehead Public Schools system.
Some of the events that occurred to celebrate Family Literacy Day included:
Westmount Public School
Wednesday, January 27
Lakehead University Hockey players were at Westmount Public School to read with children and talk about balancing academics and athletics at 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Parents and guardians joined their children for an indoor picnic at 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.. During this time, the families had lunch and read together.

Author Miranda Currie Visited
Miranda is a First Nations writer that has always loved the outdoor life and teaching. She has earned degrees in Outdoor Recreation and a B. Ed in Outdoor Education, which helped her to put enough words together to write some great children’s books! She lives in Yellowknife, in a small cabin on the shores of the Great Slave Lake, where she enjoys, playing music, baking cookies and building things. Check out her website at www.mirandacurrie.ca
