Civically Engaged

During the week of October 21, Grade 10 Civics students at the three Lakehead Public Schools secondary schools will learn all about civic engagement firsthand from a variety of community partners. The students and community partners will be participating in a unique learning activity, the Civic Action Project, a lead up to the culminating activity for the Civics students. The culminating activity will see students develop their own civic action plan by identifying a need in the community and addressing it through their own actions.
“The community partners will visit the Civics students at the three high schools and participate in speed rounds for 15 minutes at a time to talk about their own personal civic engagement journey,” says Noel Jones, Experiential Learning Resource Teacher at Lakehead Public Schools. “The community partners will talk about civic engagement, why they felt compelled to get involved and what difference they think their work is making.”
The media are invited to attend a session at Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute on Thursday, October 24 at 12:55 p.m. to 2:10 p.m. The following speakers will be presenting to students:
