Cooking for Cred!

Students from the Lakehead Adult Education Centre are following a new recipe for success! Through a partnership between Lakehead Public Schools and Roots to Harvest, Adult Education students can earn credits by participating in an eight week experiential learning program that incorporates culinary skills, food handling, safety certifications, healthy eating and financial/life skills. The program, “Cooking for Cred”, is held at the Roots to Harvest Kitchen on Fort William Road.
“This is an incredible opportunity for our students to develop some marketable skills and to earn certifications in addition to earning very valuable credits that they can put towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma,” says Samantha Peotto, Manager of the Lakehead Adult Education Centre. “We are very pleased to have worked with Roots to Harvest to develop this unique program for our students.”
With funding from a Ministry of Education Experiential Learning for Adults Project, the Cooking for Cred Program provides an opportunity for the students to learn from local chefs and to gain hands on experience in making decisions on menu, food preparation and food sourcing.
“By working together with the Thunder Bay culinary community, students will be involved in the local food scene and develop real world skills,” says Erin Beagle, Executive Director at Roots to Harvest. “It’s a great way to do school in a way that is relevant and meaningful for adult learners.”
On Monday, January 29, students will be working with Derek Lucchese from Both Hands Pizza to learn about and make bread and pizza dough.
