Holodomor Mobile Classroom

Dark Period in History Remembered

Some light will be cast on a very dark period in world history during a visit to Hammarskjold High School by the Holodomor Mobile Classroom on Friday, May 4. The Holomodor was a famine-genocide carried out in 1932-33 by the Soviet Union led by Joseph Stalin, which resulted in the deaths of millions of Ukrainians. The Holodomor was a driving factor for many Ukrainians immigrating to Canada.

“Many people are well aware of the horrors of the Holocaust which occurred during the Second World War, but the same people may not be aware of the millions of human lives lost during the Holomodor,” says Jason Timko, Teacher at Hammarskjold High School. “It is imperative to provide this very unique learning experience for our students so that they are able to gain a better understanding of this very dark and often overlooked period in world history.”

Hammarskjold High School students will learn about the Holodomor in the Holodomor Mobile Classroom. The mobile classroom is a state of the art RV that was created to provide educational seminars on the Holodomor across Canada during the Holodomor National Awareness Tour. Students will participate in a facilitator-led educational experience where they receive a foundation on the history of the Holodomor by exploring various resources on tablets. Students will piece together a history of the Holomodor through exploration, collaboration and detective work. Through this experience, the students will gain a valuable understanding of the Holomodor and the effects on the Ukraine. The Holodomor Mobile Classroom can accommodate up to 30 students and is wheelchair accessible.
