Going to Bat for the Bats

Students at in the Grade 11 Biology Class and the Grade 8 Kickstart Tech Design Class at Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute have partnered to bring homes to needy bats. The partnership has expanded to include Five Mile Public School! Five Mile Grade 6, 7 and 8 students will be visiting Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute on Thursday, December 1 to learn more about bats and then put that knowledge towards helping our fury friends.

“Our Grade 11 students will be teaching the Five mile students about bat biology, including current threats and conservation efforts being made to assist the bats in our area,” says Michelle Probizanski, Principal of Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute. “The students will then take that newly learned bat knowledge and put it to practical use!”

The students will work together to build bat boxes, which have been shown to be beneficial in helping bats survive. The boxes will be sold for $30 by Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute students to support bat conservation research being done by the University of Winnipeg, Craig Willis Bat Research Program – http://www.willisbatlab.org. Bat boxes will be available for sale at SCVI in the third week of December, just in time for Christmas!
