Pow Wow

Honouring Culture – Pow Wow CANCELLED

Please be advised that the POW WOW scheduled for today at the Jim McCuaig Education Centre will be cancelled due to weather conditions.

The POW WOW will be rescheduled and the date will be forwarded to you as soon it is determined.

The Lakehead Public Schools Aboriginal Education Advisory Committee (AEAC) with the support of the Parent Involvement Committee (PIC), is pleased to host a Pow Wow for all Lakehead Public Schools families on Friday October 5. The Pow Wow, with community partner Biwaase’aa as the Host Drum, will be held at the Jim McCuaig Education Centre 2135 Sills Street from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

“We are very excited to welcome our students and their families to join us as we celebrate Indigenous culture and traditions,” says Lakehead Public Schools First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) Community Liaison Officer.

Pow Wows promote cultural pride, respect and health for young and old in an inclusive setting. Pow Wows serve an important role in many Indigenous peoples’ lives as a forum to visit family and friends, and to celebrate their cultural heritage, while also serving as a site for cross-cultural sharing with non-Indigenous attendees and participants.

Through Shkoday Abinojiiwak Obimiwedoon, Biwaase’aa offers culturally appropriate programs and services for Aboriginal youth. Programs provided include in-school student support such as mentorship, literacy and cultural teachings; after-school programs; and lunch and snack programs.
