Kindness isn’t Just a Game at Gron Morgan!

French Immersion students in Grades 4 to 6 at Ecole Gron Morgan Public School recently completed a unit of study on Random Acts of Kindness. During the study, the students brainstormed ideas to spread good in their class, school and our community. The project not only had a positive impact on the school, but it will also greatly benefit those who access services at Shelter House Thunder Bay.
“The Random Acts of Kindness project certainly opened the eyes of our students to show them how random acts of kindness can have positive impacts for their fellow students,’ says Jo-Anne Lacroix, Ecole Gron Morgan Public School French Immersion Teacher. “The students created a kindness game that had instant results. Students felt that others were smiling more, they were making new friends and they were more excited to come to school.”
Following lessons that included several videos that showed real people doing kind things for others without the expectation of getting anything in return, the students did some brainstorming and came up with a plan! The classes came up with the idea for each student to choose one person randomly from the class and spread kindness to them by writing them notes of encouragement, inviting them to play, sitting beside them during lunch time, making them crafts etc. As with any game, there were rules – they could only tell their teacher and their parents who they chose and they couldn’t buy anything. One class made inspirational posters to post around the school with sayings like – “Always Bring Your Own Light, You are Awesome, and Light up the World with Kindness!”
“Following the success of the study, the students in all three classes wanted to spread a wider kindness net in our community, “says Mme Lacroix. “The students decided to use their powers of good to help the clients of Shelter House Thunder Bay.”
The students are giving back to our community by purchasing and donating things that are always needed at Shelter House Thunder Bay – coffee, socks and underwear. Gary Mack, Executive Director of Shelter House Thunder Bay visited Ecole Gron Morgan Public School on Wednesday, March 29 at 10:20 a.m. to receive the donated items and meet the students.
Students donated a whopping 108 pairs of socks, 150 pairs of underwear and 9,355 grams or 9.5 litres of coffee!
