Kingsway Renewal Celebration

Following construction that began last Spring and concluded in January, the students of Hyde Park Public School and Kingsway Park Public School are all under one roof in the newly expanded and renovated Kingsway Park Public School. Members of the school community, MPP Bill Mauro, Trustees, community partners and Lakehead Public Schools Administration attended the official grand opening of the “new” Kingsway Park Public School on Friday, February 23.

“We are extremely proud of the work that was completed to unite the Kingsway Park and Hyde Park students in the newly renovated and expanded Kingsway Park Public School,” says Ian MacRae, Director of Education, Lakehead Public Schools. “The enhancements at Kingsway Park Public School will provide a modern and innovative environment for students to learn and thrive for generations to come.”

Features of the renovations and expansion include:

• Three new Kindergarten classrooms
• A full-sized gymnasium with a wood floor
• An outdoor classroom
• Two new play structures – Kindergarten & Main Play Area
• Culinary Arts classroom/lab
• Grade 1 classroom
• Little Lions Daycare

“Since the new wing opened in January, the new facilities have been very well utilized including the new full sized gym and the Culinary room,” says Darren Lentz, Principal of Kingsway Park Public School. “The Culinary Room is proving to be beneficial not only our students, but for all of our schools on the south side of the city.”

The Culinary Arts classroom/lab provides a venue for students to learn about cooking basics and kitchen/food safety for all Grade 7 and 8 classes for the elementary schools in the Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute/Churchill Collegiate and Vocational Institute Family of Schools. This year, the same program will provided to each of the schools and in subsequent full school years, Grade 7 students will be provided with Part 1 and Grade 8 students will receive Part 2 of the program.

The Kingsway Park Public School Community was invited to a community open house on the evening of Thursday, February 22. Community members were provided with student led tours of the recent renovations and the new addition.
