National Indigenous History Month

June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada. This is an opportunity for all Canadians to learn about the histories, sacrifices, cultures, contributions, strength, and resilience of Indigenous peoples. Lakehead District School Board is proud to be part of the way forward, working in education to teach the true and accurate history of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
With the recent discovery at Kamloops Indian Residential School, the past has become the present. We are reminded of the horrific traumas endured by Indigenous families and communities as a result of the Indian Residential Schools system in Canada. It also serves as a reminder that Indigenous history is all our history. Systemic racism continues to affect First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples. At Lakehead District School Board, we strive to eliminate racial discrimination. We promote a climate that is safe, welcoming, accessible, inclusive, and respectful for all.
Lakehead District School Board is located on the traditional territory of the Ojibwe people of Fort William First Nation, within the Robinson Superior Treaty of 1850. We continue to listen to the wisdom and guidance offered to us as we work collaboratively with local and regional First Nations communities to support the learning, achievement, and well-being of all students.
At Lakehead District School Board, we are committed to implementing the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action. This commitment is ongoing, as we work towards ensuring knowledge and understanding for all staff and students is embedded in the fabric of all our school communities.
