Students Taking a Ride

During the month of October, Lakehead Public Schools Indigenous students in Grade 9 through 12 who may be new to Thunder Bay or returning will have the opportunity to join “Safe Places, Safe Spaces” chartered tour to learn more about the City. On Monday September 30th , Superior Collegiate Vocational Institute students will spend the day traveling around the city by bus and visiting a number of locations to learn about recreation and health services available to them in the community. A focus on safe Places and safe spaces is the theme of the days, each High School will be taking a tour.
“This unique tour of our community is all about positive places and positive spaces,” says Ashley Nurmela First Nation, Metis and Inuit (FNMI) Community Liaison Officer. “We are extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to work with our community partners to provide this genuine learning experience for our students, our hope is that this chartered tour will assist students in being oriented in the city and know where to go when they are bored, or in need of medical attention. Without our community partners this would not be available to our students. It is imperative that Thunder Bay be the student’s home away from home while fulfilling their education needs and with that safe places and safe spaces need to be a priority outside of school”.
The special charter bus will then take the students to a number of locations including:
- Waverley Public Library-Tour, library cards
- Canada Games Complex
- Indigenous Friendship Centre
- Thunder Bay District Health Unit
