Close to 100 students from the Five Mile Public, Kingsway Park Public School and Westmount Public School Learning Academies worked towards specialized certification through the Success Certification Program at Confederation College. The students received training and certification in one of four specialized areas.

“This was an excellent opportunity for students in the Learning Academies to begin building their repertoire of skills as they will be soon entering summer job market,” says Jeremy Noel, Pathways Coordinator, Lakehead Public Schools. “The certifications will greatly reinforce their resumes and ultimately, their marketability to a summer employer.”

Students had the opportunity to receive Success Certification in one of the following topics:

  • Safe Food Handling
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Babysitting
  • Bicycle Safety and Maintenance

The three pilot Lakehead Public Schools Academies provide Grade 7 and 8 students with the opportunity to learn in an experiential and rigorous environment while meeting the requirements of the Ontario Curriculum. The pilot academies provide opportunities for students to participate in inquiry and/or project activities that encourage students to learn through active experience, reflect on the experience and apply their learning to various aspects of their lives.
