Superior Students are Relishing Their Foods Class!

Students in Grade 10 and 11 Foods Classes at Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute are learning a tasty process that will see the finished product as a welcome lunch time addition. The students will be working with Student Support Professional Pat Wielobob to prepare three types of relish for the Superior CVI Get Fresh Café.

“This is an incredible opportunity for the students to learn about preparing food products and the canning process,” says Patricia Cibinel, Foods Teacher at Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute. “They will then be able to share the fruits of their labour in our Get Fresh Café as condiments for various local food products including the hamburgers.”

The classes will be using traditional relish products like cucumbers, green tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic to make the relishes. Most of the produce is locally sourced, including green tomatoes which were harvested from the Superior Greenhouse along with green tomatoes from Roots to Harvest community gardens. The students will be chopping and preparing the produce and completing the canning process during the class. Roots to Harvest staff will also be there to lend a hand.

The Get Fresh Café is a collaboration between the Lakehead Public Schools, the CUPE union that runs the cafeterias, Foods and Nutrition classes, Roots to Harvest, Loudons Distribution and numerous local farms. The Get Fresh Café project replaces pre-processed foods with meals made from scratch with fresh, local ingredients. Get Fresh Cafés are also in operation at Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute and Hammarskjold High School.
