Westmount Peddles Kindness and Builds Skills

On Friday September 22, The Grade 7 and 8 students in the Westmount Public School Global Citizenship Academy worked in partnership with the with the Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute 10 Transportation Technology class to repair and restore old, donated bicycles to send to Africa as part of Westgate’s Bicycles for Humanity program. This is the second year for the program. In addition, a section of the class was working with Grade 9 students to design and build dog houses which are being donated to Thunder Bay Animal Services and building toys for the Toys for Tots campaign at Christmas.
“This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to get some experience with their Family of Schools partner while also exploring technology, and building new relationships,” says Lisa Dampier, Grade 7/8 Teacher at Westmount Public School. “Our students are also able to participate in this effort and contribute to the local work of Thunder Bay Animal Services and Toys for Tots and the global work that is done by Bicycles for Humanity.”
The Westmount Public School Academy, focused on Sports & Recreation, Fine Arts and Global Citizenship, provides Grade 7 and 8 students with the opportunity to learn in an experiential and rigorous environment while meeting the requirements of the Ontario Curriculum. The Academy provides opportunities for students to participate in inquiry and/or project activities that encourage students to learn through active experience, reflect on the experience and apply their learning to various aspects of their lives.
