Through the Science North Portable Planetarium, Grades 4 to 8 students at McKellar Park Central Public School will be learning about the Indigenous worldview as they “sit at the fire” with two people who are connected to the traditional ways. Following the visit to the planetarium, the students will have an understanding of common constellations visible in the night sky and the Anishinaabe stories that define them.
“In addition to meeting numerous curriculum expectations for the students in grades 4 to 8, the students will learn how the First People of Northwestern Ontario used science and innovation to survive,” says Jo-Anne Giertuga, Principal of McKellar Park Central Public School. “We are very excited to have Science North visit and set up their Portable Planetarium in our gym!”
The Science North Portable Planetarium is an inflatable classroom where students can learn about the stars, planets, space and more. The planetarium consists of an inflatable dome that fits 30 students inside, a digital projector system and the latest in planetarium software, Digistar 5.
