Westmount has the Code!

It’s not the Bat Mobile, it’s the Code Mobile! On Thursday, April 9th, students at Westmount Public School have the unique opportunity to learn a very valuable skill – coding. The Code Mobile, presented by Canada Learning Code, offers fun, beginner-friendly, hands-on workshops that teach youth computational thinking and technical skills in a social and collaborative way.
“This is an incredible opportunity for our students to learn a very valuable skill from true experts in the field of coding,” says Eric Fredrickson, Principal of Westmount Public School. “Technical skills such as coding can lead to many viable and exciting career opportunities in the future for students. We are very excited to be able to provide this opportunity for our students.”
The Code Mobile initiative began as a cross-country road-trip in the Summer of 2016. A cargo van was transformed into a computer lab on wheels, complete with all the tools needed to host pop-up workshops in communities big and small across the country. With funding from the federal government’s CanCode initiative, Canada Learning Code expanded this model for technology education by establishing a permanent fleet of 13 trucks that will operate year-round across the country.
Each Code Mobile is powered by a regional Code Squad whose mission is to put technology in the hands of Canadian youth who may not otherwise have the experience. From girls to newcomers to Indigenous youth to young Canadians with disabilities, the Code Mobile gives all Canadian youth the chance to build, and not just consume, technology.
