Learner Profile

The learner is at the centre of the IB Programme. The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.
As IB learners, we strive to be:
- Inquirers
- Knowledgeable
- Thinkers
- Communicators
- Principled
- Open-minded
- Caring
- Risk-takers
- Balanced
- Reflective
The Core of the Diploma Programme consists of Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS), the Extended Essay and the course, Theory of Knowledge (TOK). With CAS, students are expected to evaluate the importance of life outside of school, and CAS provides a refreshing balance to the academic emphasis. Student participation in artistic activities, sports and community service encourages young people to share their energies and talents while developing awareness and ability to work with others.
Diploma candidates are required to undertake original research and write an extended essay of 4000 words. This project offers the opportunity to investigate a topic of special interest and allows the students to practice the kind of independent research and writing skills expected at university. Students must choose a topic in a subject area currently taught at Superior CVI.
The Theory of Knowledge is a course that all DP students must take. It asks students to reflect on the nature of knowledge, and on how we know what we claim to know.
Students may also choose to take only certain courses at the IB level. Rather than completing the entire Diploma Programme, students may choose individual IB courses and work toward a Course Certificate.
The DP is internationally recognized as representing one of the highest standards in university preparatory education. More than 1,000 colleges and universities in North America have recognition policies on how they weigh it in admissions, advanced standing, college credit and scholarships. A list of colleges and universities that grantcredit, scholarships and/or advanced standing for DP diplomas and certificates is available at www.ibo.org.
