Addressing Gender Violence

On Thursday, November 30 student leaders from each Lakehead Public Schools elementary and secondary school will be attending the Engaging Male Students to Reduce and Prevent Gender-Based Violence workshop and training session. The students in Grades 7 to 10 will learn skills to help them to be effective leaders on the issue of gender-based violence and to help them to organize events in their schools to commemorate National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women on Wednesday, December 6. The day is supported by the White Ribbon Campaign.
“This is an excellent opportunity for our students to receive training on the issue of gender based violence and to take what they learn back to their respective schools,” says Jeff Upton, Lakehead Public Schools Education Officer and workshop organizer. “We are very excited to have a number of committed presenters who act as positive, strong role models for the young men and boys as they demonstrate their value of women as equals.”

The White Ribbon Campaign is a global movement of men and boys working to end male violence against women and girls. White Ribbon positively engages men, young men and boys through relevant educational programming that challenges language and behaviours, as well as harmful ideas of manhood that lead to violence against women.
