Hammarskjold Hosts Camp 21

One Hundred and fifty Lakehead Public Schools Grade 6 to 8 students had the unique opportunity to attend Camp 21 at Hammarskjold High School on the Friday, November 18 Professional Activity Day. Camp 21 is an interactive and fun day that is focused on the technology that is being currently utilized in classrooms throughout the Lakehead Public Schools system. Camp 21 is provided through a partnership between the Microsoft Educator Network and Lakehead Public Schools.

“We were very excited and pleased to be able to provide this very unique opportunity for our students during this Professional Activity Day,” says Eric Fredrickson, Principal of McKellar Park Central Public School and Chair of the Lakehead Public Schools Information Technology Committee. “Through this partnership with the Microsoft Educator Network, participating students can experience a true conference like setting complete with keynote speakers and breakout sessions with hands-on activities to explore the exciting technology in our schools.”

Following the keynote address by Brian Aspinall, Prime Minister’s Award For Teaching Excellence recipient and Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert Fellow, students attended a Microsoft Core Learning Session led by Fair Chance Learning (http://www.fairchancelearning.com) where they learned the ins and outs of Microsoft Office365 including OneDrive, Sway and OneNote. After lunch the students will be able to attend the following breakout sessions for the remainder of the day:

  • Coding
  • Minecraft
  • Lego Robotics
  • Makerspace with 3D Printing and Microsoft HoloLens!
  • Leading with Technology

“The one hundred and fifty spots filled up very quickly and we had to initiate a waiting list for students who want to attend,” says Fredrickson. “Students are already talking about the breakout sessions with many of them eagerly anticipating the 3D printing and Microsoft HoloLens session.”

Camp 21 is a free all day session provided by between the Microsoft Educator Network and Lakehead Public Schools. Lunch is provided for everyone and transportation is provided for those who require it.

On Saturday, November 19, the Microsoft Educator Network and Lakehead Public Schools will be presenting Camp 21 for K to 12 administrators, teachers and support staff. The interactive professional development event focused on technology in the classroom is being held at Hammarskjold High School.

Attending staff will have the opportunity to have hands on experience with HoloLens and Minecraft at the Microsoft Playground.

  • Accessible and Inclusive Learning Tools
  • Minecraft: Education Edition
  • Office 365
  • OneNote
  • Skype in the Classroom
  • Sway
