How Much Does Generosity Weigh?

How much does generosity weigh? That was Westmount Public School’s catchphrase for the last few weeks as the school’s classes teamed up to raise heavy amounts of coin to donate to the city’s well-respected Christmas Cheer Fund. The fundraising within schools got creative this year as the counting of cash was off limits to respect infection prevention and control measures. Westmount Public School decided to weigh its generosity and by the second week of December, the school had collected nearly 100 pounds of coin. The coins reached a height of 429 cm when measured in graduated cylinders. Combined with the online and paper bill donations they received, the school will make a big difference for families this holiday season.

With intense holiday spirit at Lakehead Public Schools, many schools pulled their weight to support the Christmas Cheer Fund in their own fashion. Kingsway Park Public School, Valley Central Public School and Crestview Public School, for example, kickstarted December with Spirit Week to ring in donations. Every day had a theme, such as hat day and plaid day. School administrators had a blast promoting Spirit Week to encourage donations to the point of spurring throw downs and Twitter rivalries!

Woodcrest Public School sought to attract donations by tripling the incentive for their school community: 1. Supporting the Christmas Cheer Fund; 2. Partnering with a valued local business; 3. Relishing a delicious snack! The school partnered with The Sweet North Bakery to take orders for cinnamon and salted pretzels to be individually wrapped and delivered to the school for the students to enjoy. 100% of the proceeds from the sales went to Christmas Cheer.

Thank you to all schools and families for participating in this year’s Christmas Cheer Fund. Happy holidays!
