Lakehead Public Schools Families

Dear Lakehead Public Schools Families,

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this very difficult time. As you are aware, the Minister of Education has extended the closure of all publicly funded schools for the rest of the academic year with an anticipated re-opening scheduled for September 2020.

Throughout the past two months, students have been participating in the Learn at Home program online or through printed packages for those with limited or no access to reliable internet. The Learn at Home program will continue for the rest of this school year. We understand that this learning experience has been challenging and we appreciate the commitment and perseverance of our students and their families. We will be sending out a survey for families shortly that will provide you the opportunity to provide feedback on the Learn at Home program. This information will help us moving forward into June and beyond.

Lakehead Public Schools staff have been working with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit on a plan for students and their families to access their belongings in schools. The plan will observe all public health guidelines with respect to limiting the spread of COVID 19 while students safely collect their belongings. Schools will communicate the process and pick up dates to families later this week or early next week.

The Minister of Education has indicated that plans for schools to reopen in September will be released before the end of June. We will continue to follow the guidance and recommendations of the Ministry of Education and our public health partners. The safety of our students and staff will feature prominently in all aspects of our schools reopening in the Fall.

We appreciate and respect the outstanding efforts being made by our students, staff and families in response to this very difficult time.

Thank you.

Ian MacRae, Director of Education
