Media Release: Board Approves 2023-2024 Budget

(Thunder Bay, ON) At the June 27, 2023 Regular Board Meeting, the Lakehead District School Board approved its 2023-2024 Operating and Capital Budget. The $160,920,734 budget supports the Lakehead Public Schools commitment to the success of every student. 

Chair of Lakehead District School Board Ellen Chambers said student success is front of mind when developing the annual budget.

“It is inspiring to look forward to the upcoming school year with the approval of the 2023-2024 budget. The budget empowers the Board to pursue its Commitment to Reconciliation and ensure that its Vision of supporting equity of opportunities for students is implemented in all we do,” said Ellen Chambers, Chair of the Lakehead District School Board. 

The 2023-2024 Operating and Capital Budget was developed in an inclusive manner with stakeholder input. Input was received from several stakeholders in the form of presentations and written submissions. On April 4, 2023, community stakeholder groups provided presentations to the Budget Committee.

Chair of the Budget Committee Scottie Wemigwans said stakeholder input is essential to the development of the annual budget.

“We value the feedback brought to the Budget Committee by the stakeholder groups. It is essential in the development of the annual budget. The Lakehead District School Board is pleased to have the opportunity to collaborate with insightful and dedicated partners in establishing a comprehensive budget which aligns with our strategic plan,” said Scottie Wemigwans, Chair of the Budget Committee.

Stakeholder groups participating in the budget consultations included:

•           Special Education Advisory Committee;

•           Parent Involvement Committee;

•           Aboriginal Education Advisory Committee (now renamed Miiniwewinan: Indigenous Education Advisory Committee);

•           School/Parent Councils;

•           Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation – (Secondary Teachers, Student Support Professionals, and Early Childhood Educators);

•           Lakehead Ontario Principals’ Council;

•           Canadian Office & Professional Employees-Local 454;

•           Lakehead Elementary Teachers’ of Ontario.

The next step in the budget process is the formal submission to the Ministry of Education.
