Viking Character Supporting Families

Hammarskjold High School students in Grade 9 Ojibway Language and Grade 10 Indigenous Studies will be working with an artist to support Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) families on Wednesday, December 6. The MMIWG hearings are currently being held in Thunder Bay.

The students will be working with artist Jaime Black to design and paint banners to support MMIWG families and they will be creating red cloth ties to make as offerings in memory of the women and girls. The students and Ms. Black will also be exploring other materials and creating some visual images using performance based techniques.

Jaime Black is a Metis multidisciplinary artist based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She works in the mediums of photography, sculpture, print, and installation. Her current work, the REDress Project focuses around the issue of missing or murdered Aboriginal women across Canada. The project is an installation project that seeks to collect 600 red dresses that will later be installed in public spaces throughout Winnipeg and across Canada as a visual reminder of the Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
