Westgate Says NO to Violence Against Women

Students in the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) at Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute have worked with their peers to say NO to Violence Against Women. Along with the recent White Ribbon campaign that was designed to commemorate “The National Day of Remembrance and Action on violence against Women”, the students organized a school-wide collection challenge for female toiletries and toys for the clients of Beendigen Crisis Home. The homeroom collecting the most items won a pizza party at the end of the drive.

“Many women who use the services of Beendigen Crisis Home, often leave home with only with their children and what they are wearing that day,” says Santander-Maturana. “Our GSA recognizes the pressures that Beendigen Crisis Home faces to provide programs by collecting feminine toiletries and young children’s toys.”

A representative of Beendigen Crisis Home will be visiting Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute on Wednesday, December 13 at 12:15 p.m. to pick up the collected items.
