Westmount Diwali Celebration

Students in the Westmount Public School Global Citizenship Academy will be learning about the Indian holiday of Diwali on Friday, November 1. Following a lesson about Diwali, the students will be participating in a mini-celebration with members of the Thunder Bay Indian Community.

“We are very excited to have this wonderful learning opportunity at Westmount Public school,” says Lisa Dampier, Westmount Public School Global Citizenship Academy Teacher. “Our friends from the Indian Community will be bringing some traditional sweets, decorations and clothing to share with us as they talk about this cultural holiday.”

Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights, which is celebrated every autumn in the northern hemisphere (spring in southern hemisphere). One of the most popular festivals of Hinduism, Diwali or Deepavali symbolizes the spiritual “victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance”. During the celebration, temples, homes, shops and office buildings are brightly illuminated.

The Westmount Public School Academy provides Grade 7 and 8 students with the opportunity to learn in an experiential and rigorous environment while meeting the requirements of the Ontario Curriculum. The Lakehead Public Schools academies provide opportunities for students to participate in inquiry and/or project activities that encourage students to learn through active experience, reflect on the experience and apply their learning to various aspects of their lives.
