Mining Matters!

On Tuesday, November 26, Grade 4 students at Kingsway Park Public School will have the opportunity to learn about a growing regional industry – mining! Through the Mining Matters program, sponsored by North American Palladium, the students will learn about mining and minerals based on the Grade 4 rocks and minerals science unit.

“Through this partnership between Mining Matters and North American Palladium, the students will be able to get a greater understanding of what they are learning in the classroom as it relates to mining and minerals,” Says Darren Lentz, Principal of Kingsway Park Public School. “A practical hands-on exercise will allow the student to run their own mine to get a glimpse into the mining and minerals sector.”

The half-day session involves hands-on activities including mineral testing, the rock cycle, fossils, and mining, meeting a number of curriculum expectations. Using a chocolate chip cookie, students are challenged to run their own miniature mine from exploration, development, mining, all the way to reclamation, showing the costs and importance of each phase.
