Treaty Recognition at Woodcrest

As Treaties Recognition Week continues, Woodcrest Public School Grade 3 students, along with their Grade 8 helpers, have a unique opportunity to learn about the importance of treaties and Indigenous culture within our society. On Thursday, November 7, the students will be learning as they progress through four treaty related learning stations.
“It is extremely important for our students to learn about the importance of treaties and the responsibilities that we all have in relation to treaties,” says Shanlee Linton, Woodcrest Public School Grade 3 Teacher. “We have spent the week learning about treaties and through the stations, the students will be able continue that learning through hands-on activities.”
Students will rotate through the following treaty learning stations:
- Lego Wampum Belt
- Beading
- Storytelling Puzzle with colouring
- Drawing Indigenous Symbols
Treaties are the legally binding agreements that set out the rights, responsibilities and relationships of First Nations and the federal and provincial governments. In 2016, Ontario passed new legislation to bring awareness to the treaty relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in the province. Ontario is covered by 46 treaties and other agreements, such as land purchases by the Crown signed between 1781 and 1930.
