Hammarskjold Student Receives $100,000 Scholarship

Lakehead Public Schools is proud to announce that Hammarskjold High School Grade 12 student Adam Luoma has been named to the 2020 class of Loran Scholars. Adam was one of 36 secondary students from a pool of 5,194 applicants across Canada to receive the award. The Loran Award is valued at $100,000 over four years, including mentorship, funding for summer internships and participation in an extensive network of past and present scholars.
“The entire Hammarskjold High School is incredibly proud of Adam for receiving this very prestigious scholarship,” says Derek DiBlasio, Principal of Hammarskjold High School. “This is an incredible accomplishment for a truly deserving student. Through his ongoing academic and co-curricular success, Adam makes our school a better place to be every day.”
Adam is the president of a student-led leadership organization that runs three annual conferences. He is the co-president of the Hammarskjold Student Council and member of the music committee. Adam performs with the school jazz band and orchestra while also playing on the volleyball and badminton teams. He coaches the junior badminton team and finds the time to work as a barista. Adam is planning on studying Neuroscience with a focus on Music Cognition in university next year.
The Loran Award is based on evidence of character, commitment to community service, and leadership potential. Over 400 volunteers interviewed 545 semi-finalists and then invited 88 finalists to the National Selections on January 31st and February 1st. Each of the 36 Loran Scholars was interviewed or assessed by up to 12 different people over the course of three months.
