CD Howe Checkmate

Over 90 Grade 3 to 8 students from 9 Lakehead Public Schools vied for the title of champion at the second annual CD Howe Public School Chess Tournament on Friday, May 20. The game by nature might have been serious and the competition fierce, but the opportunities for learning were abundant!

“Chess is an excellent opportunity for students to be focused on an activity that requires them to use mathematic and decision making skills,” says Wayne McElhone, Principal of CD Howe Public School. “The tournament also provides an opportunity for students of all levels to compete and above all, to have fun.”

The competition ran from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and featured chess players from the following schools:

Agnew H. Johnston Public School

Algonquin Public School

CD Howe Public School

Edgewater Park Public School

Kingsway Park Public School
