Science Fair – The Documentary!

On Monday, December 17, CD Howe Public School has the honour of hosting the Thunder Bay screening of the National Geographic Documentary Films’ “Science Fair”. The CD Howe students will be joined for the screening by students from Westmount Public School, Vance Chapman Public School and Five Mile Public School. The documentary will be introduced by three time International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) participant and Hammarskjold High School graduate Emily Cross. Emily, Schulich Leader, is currently studying and conducting paleontology and geochemistry research at the University of British Columbia.
“We are very excited to be have the opportunity to host this screening of Science Fair and we are especially pleased to have Emily Cross to introduce this very special documentary,” says Elaine Oades, Principal of CD Howe Public School. “Emily with her international science fair experience coupled with her vast and growing scientific accomplishments will be an extraordinary role model for all students in attendance.”
Emily will be introducing the film by speaking to her personal experience preparing for and attending ISEF in Pittsburgh and Phoenix in 2015, 2016 and 2018, and by sharing additional photos and videos giving a more in-depth view of the event, and of the exciting world of science fairs and student research in general.
The National Geographic Documentary “Science Fair”, has been hailed by critics as “immensely likeable,” “brilliant and quirky” and an “ode to the teenage science geeks on who our future depends.” The documentary was the winner of the audience award at Sundance and South by Southwest Conference and Film Festival (SXSW). The documentary follows nine high school students from around the globe as they navigate rivalries, setbacks and, of course, hormones, on their journey to compete at The International Science and Engineering Fair. As 1,700 of the smartest, quirkiest teens from 78 different countries face off, only one will be named Best in Fair. The film, from Fusion and Muck Media and directed by the DuPont Award-winning and Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaking team Cristina Costantini and Darren Foster, offers a front seat to the victories, defeats and motivations of an incredible group of young men and women who are on a path to change their lives, and the world, through science.
