Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT)

To ensure that students have acquired necessary reading and writing skills that apply to all areas of the curriculum up to the end of Grade 9, all students are required to write the OSSLT in Grade 10. Students who have been unsuccessful in passing the test are eligible to fulfill the requirement through the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course. Principals have the discretion to allow students to enroll in the course before they have a second opportunity to take the test, if the principal determines that it is in the best educational interest of the student (Ministry of Education Policy/Program Memorandum 127). Successful completion of the OSSLT or OSSLC is a graduation requirement.

These tests are administered by the Education Quality Assessment Organization (EQAO). As an arm’s length agency of the provincial government, EQAO provides parents, teachers and the public with accurate and reliable information about student achievement.

All students who participate in EQAO’s tests receive an Individual Student Report (ISR). This report contains personal information that is protected under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. ISRs are distributed to students in the fall for those who wrote the test in the previous school year. For further information, contact your school’s principal.
