Minister of Labour Visit

Students and staff of the Manufacturing Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Program at Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate and Vocational Institute hadan opportunity to have a discussion about health and safety with someone who has a significant interest in the topic, Kevin Flynn, the Minister of Labour. Minister Flynn spent some time with some students as they discussed health and safety and the obligations that we all have to health and safety in all facets of our lives.

Minister Kevin Flynn Biography:
Kevin Flynn was first elected to the Ontario legislature in 2003 as MPP for Oakville. He was re-elected in 2007, 2011 and 2014, making him the longest serving MPP in the Oakville riding.

Flynn is the Minister of Labour and a member of Treasury Board. He has served as Parliamentary Assistant to the Ministers of Infrastructure; Transportation; Training, Colleges and Universities; Education; Environment; Energy; Democratic Renewal; and Labour.

He was also Chair of the Standing Committee on Mental Health and Addictions.
Since becoming Minister of Labour, Flynn has extended workplace protection for firefighters by adding six cancers to the list of those presumed to be related to their work, and he has introduced legislation to increase fairness for vulnerable workers and tie the minimum wage to the rate of inflation.”

The Manufacturing Specialist High Skills Major programs provide students interested in a career in the Manufacturing sector (metal worker, welder, millwright, engineer etc) with the requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) while developing essential manufacturing related skills and work habits. Students learn sector-specific skills and knowledge in a hands-on, career related learning environment with others who have the same goals and career expectations.
