Students Taking a Ride

During the month of November, Lakehead Public Schools Indigenous students in Grade 9 through 12 who may be new to Thunder Bay or returning will have the opportunity to join the “Take a Ride” chartered tour to learn more about the City. On Thursday, November 1, Westgate Collegiate Vocational Institute students will spend the day traveling around the city by bus and visiting a number of locations to learn about recreation and health services available to them in the community. A focus on safe spaces and safe places will also be a significant component of the day.
“This unique tour of our community is all about positive places and positive spaces,” says Ashley Nurmela First Nation, Metis and Inuit (FNMI) Community Liaison Officer. “We are extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to work with our community partners to provide this genuine learning experience for our students. Our hope is that this chartered tour will assist students with being oriented in the city and know where to go when they are bored, or in need of medical attention..”
The special charter bus will then take the students to a number of locations including
- Brodie/Waverly Public Library
- Students will tour the library and get library cards
- Canada Games Complex
- Facility tour with information on recreation programs and PRO Kids.
- Lunch at the Marina with Roots to Harvest Farm to Café
- Presentations include River Audit and Public Safety provided by Constable Pilley and Lee Ann Chrevrette and Norm Gale from the City of Thunder Bay
- City of Thunder Bay Transit Services, Dana Earle
- Indigenous Friendship Centre
- Upon arrival students will be welcomed to the centre and provided with a community calendar with free events and provided with an opportunity to join the Thunder Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre’s Youth Council.
- Anishnawbe Mushkiki
- Students will be informed of health services available to them and what Anishnawbe Mishkiki has to offer
