Westgate Safe Space Opens!

Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute students will have their very own safe space to go to thanks to the Children’s Centre Foundation and Bell Let’s Talk. Funds donated by both organizations, combined with funds raised by Westgate students and staff, has helped to create a warm and welcoming wellness space for students. The initiative was spearheaded by the Westgate Wellness Club and will be officially opened on Monday, March 7.

“We are delighted with the opportunity that this provides for our students and are very grateful of the generosity of the Children’s Centre Foundation and Bell Let’s Talk,” says Coral Charlton, Principal of Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute. “Without their support we may not have achieved this valuable addition to our overall wellness supports for students.”

The Westgate Wellness Club was formed to provide a student voice around mental health needs within the high school and they work very closely with staff from the Thunder Bay District Health Unit.

“The students are very excited and proud to present the completed Wellness Space to their peers at the opening on Monday,” said Riley Lucas, Westgate Staff Advisor and Guidance Counsellor. “They have worked extremely hard to create this very important space for their fellow students.
