Superior C & VI is proud to offer the International Baccalaureate Programme, consisting of two years in Grades 9 and 10, followed by the Diploma Programme in Grades 11 and 12. The IB Programme, a symbol of academic integrity in over 143 countries, is designed for students who are looking for a challenge as they enter high school, and are seeking classmates who have similar interests and attitudes towards school. The IB student is enthusiastic about learning and is eager to participate in a wide variety of school and community events.
The first two years of the IB Programme help to prepare students for entry into the Diploma Programme, and provide students with an enriched and accelerated course of study which goes beyond The Ontario Curriculum. The IB Diploma, designed to meet the highest standards required by any university in the world, is governed by the International Baccalaureate Head Office in Geneva, Switzerland. Students who complete the Diploma requirements place themselves at an advantage as they enter university, as the advanced nature of the IB curriculum exposes students to a significant amount of first-year university content. The IB Programme is open to all students in Thunder Bay, regardless of elementary school, and attracts students from outside the city, the province, and even the country.

The Grade 9 and 10 IB courses are designed to prepare and evaluate students for entry into the International Baccalaureate Programme. These courses cover The Ontario Curriculum in addition to providing enrichment in content and skill development.
The pace of learning is faster than the corresponding course at the regular academic level, and the activities challenge the students to problem solve in innovative ways. Successful students will demonstrate maturity, responsibility, and sound work habits.
These courses, which are enriched and accelerated, will prepare students for the challenges of the Diploma Programme. The central components will help students develop such skills as
The IB Diploma model is based on the pattern of no single country while incorporating the best of many. It has been designed as a comprehensive two-year course of study in Grades 11 and 12, that will allow its graduates to fulfill the Ontario diploma requirements and complete the International Baccalaureate components in preparation for international examinations.
The curriculum is displayed in the shape of a circle with six academic areas surrounding the core. Subjects are studied concurrently over the two years and students are required to take courses from both the Humanities and the Sciences. Students are required to select one subject from each of the six subject groups. At least three and not more than four are taken at the higher level (HL), meaning that the course represents a minimum of 240 teaching hours. Standard level (SL) courses cover 150 hours. HL courses are studied in greater depth while SL courses offer a broad exploration during the two year programme. Students are encouraged to specialize in courses they consider to be strengths while meeting the challenges of subjects that they may not normally have taken. The Science-oriented student must also learn a second language, while the Humanities-oriented student must learn about laboratory procedures.
Students may continue in the IB Programme in Grade 11
with the recommendation of the Grade 9 and 10 IB teachers.
The IB Diploma Programme offers special features in addition to the traditional strengths of a liberal arts curriculum.
Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) is a fundamental part of the IB Diploma curriculum. Students are expected to evaluate the importance of life outside of school, and CAS provides a refreshing balance to the academic emphasis. Student participation in artistic activities, sports and community service encourages young people to share their energies and talents while developing awareness and ability to work with others.
Diploma candidates are required to undertake original research and write an extended essay of 4000 words. This project offers the opportunity to investigate a topic of special interest and allows the students to practice the kind of independent research and writing skills expected at university. Students must choose a topic in a subject area currently taught at Superior CVI.
The IB Diploma Programme is a rigorous, pre-university course of study, leading to internationally assessed examinations that meet the needs of highly motivated secondary school students.
Responsibility for all academic judgements about the quality of student work lies with more than 3000 examiners worldwide, led by chief examiners with international authority. Students are assessed on both the content and the process of their achievements, and markers take into account different learning styles and cultural traditions.
Essay, short answers, and multiple choice questions on examinations are complemented by internal assessment of course work by the teachers who work with the students over the two-year period. The result of the partnership between classroom teachers and international examiners is that students have ample opportunity to demonstrate what they know and what they are able to do.
Each examined student is graded on a scale of 1 (minimum) to 7 (maximum). To receive a diploma, students must meet defined standards and conditions, including a minimum total of 24 points and the satisfactory completion of the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge course, and Creativity, Activity and Service activities. The maximum score of 45 points includes three bonus points for an exceptional essay and work in TOK.
All students are encouraged to engage in the full programme. Those who do not satisfy all requirements or who elect to take fewer than six subjects are awarded an IB Diploma Course for the examinations they have successfully completed. The spring examination session serves the majority of candidates. Each year, between 90-96% of students in Ontario who attempt the IB Diploma, earn it.
IB graduates gain admission to select universities around the world. Formal agreements exist between the IBO and many ministries of education and private institutions. Many North American colleges and universities offer special scholarships, advanced standing or course credit to students with strong IB examination results.
